iPhone 3G (The 14 hour line)
Saturday, July 12th, 2008Thursday morning, shortly after playing with the new 2.0 software I quickly decided I needed the new one on launch day. I waited in line for over 14 hours in Hilltop Shopping Center in Virginia Beach. Strange thing about waiting in line was that I arrived at 6:30PM and the next person in line didn’t show up until 4:30AM. I suppose I could have grabbed a few hours of sleep while obtaining the first spot in line. While I was waiting a local taxi service showed up and offered to go on food runs for us free of charge (not a bad deal). If you were following me on Twitter http://twitter.com/xbuzz then you quickly realized I was going a little nuts with all of the Tweets. I uploaded a few pictures while waiting in line to help pass the time and keep people around the world tuned in what was happening on the eastern sea board on release day (http://twitpic.com/photos/xbuzz).
During the wait I recieved a phone call from Leo Laporte from TwiT Live. Some of you may not be familiar with him but back in 2000 I was a huge fan of his on TechTV’s The Screen Savers. He called to for a quick interview to discuss how things were going in line in Virginia Beach. He spoke with people all over the world and it was broadcasted live on his 24 hour iPhone Release Day episode. He broadcasts on KFI 640AM in Los Angeles, CA.
So after nearly 14 hours in line I got my hands on my new iPhone at 8:07AM EST. After I left the store and heard the round of applause from the crowd I was off to work.
Quick Update: 2:30PM EST 7/12
Dane Golden, one of the guys working with Leo, just posted on Twitter a list of the participants for the iPhone release broadcast. Check it out “Chris Williams in Virginia Beach” (http://www.sxe13.com/TwitLiveWiki/index.php?title=Contributors_to_24_hours_of_iPhone)
Other guests included Kevin Rose of Digg.com and Steve Wozniak co-founder of Apple. It was awesome being able to be apart of this broadcast that included some really high profile people. Short list, but I’m there ![]()
